It has been a long and exhausting weekend with lots of stuff going on, (40th birthday parties, hockey games and a kid with Lice!!), but even though I am in need of sleep I had to post about the SSLN I was a part of today at Mary Ward CSS. This was an amazing experience for me and I hope most that attended as educators from different panels and different background came together to hash out what is needed for our students of today.

The conversation was amazing and lead by Roy Fernandes and was perfectly facilitated mostly because we had a lot to talk about.

The conversation was enlightening for me because I saw the genuine desire of people to try something. This is really the crux of what we have to do in education when it comes to leading teachers. We don’t have to convince everyone that this is necessary, we have to figure out how to get around or through the anxiety that comes with starting something new or trying something that has not been in someone’s comfort zone. The teachers that were there today were amazing as they were looking for ideas and for inspiration and are ready to get down to it, but not blindly or with too much gusto and not enough reflection. This is key to PD and the roll out of a 21C focussed revolution. Really great stuff.

“Education prepares you for certainty…but there is no longer certainty about anything”

“Solve interesting problems, don’t memorize solutions to problems we have already solved”

“The dilema is that while we want to slay the dragon (being the flawed education system), we have to actually keep in on life support while we are changing things over.”

“Either do or do not; there is no try.”

There was a lot of great conversation, activity and connections made today. I will hopefully be blogging out updates about the things that are going to worked on in this amazing community of learners as we delve deeper into the needs of our students and all the learners that we are lucky enough to work with.
